Smart phones for Pedestrian Detection

General Motors developed the technology to scan for pedestrians or cyclists to use the Wi-Fi Direct.

How the system relies heavily on Direct WiFi wireless connection that allows mobile phones to share data or communicate directly. Thus, the system works is through the provider. The experts at GM as a technology called "self-aware connected cars".

According to GM, with a wave of wireless Wi-Fi Direct, the presence of someone around the vehicle can be detected. "Wireless waves can warn drivers when there are pedestrians suddenly appeared from behind a parked vehicle longer or cyclists in the area of blind spot," explained Nady boules, director of GM Global R & D of the Electrical and Control System Research Lab.

GM still need to develop advanced applications that are compatible with Wi-Fi Direct and can be downloaded by all pedestrians and cyclists who have a smart phone. By activating it, their presence will be detected automatically by a wave of Wi-Fi from any vehicle.

To that end, GM should speed connectivity between one point and other WiFi Direct, the longest in 1 second. System must first identify the type and origin of the waves and make decisions directly connected.

"The faster the connection, the less potential for accidents on the highway," beber Donald Grimm, GM Global R & D Senior Researcher of Perception and Vehicle Control Systems.

According to the U.S. Institute for Highway Safety (NHTSA), during 2010 there were 4280 pedestrians and 618 cyclists were killed by being hit by a car. That number dropped 25 percent compared to 1995. With this new feature, GM hopes to reduce the number of fatalities due to collisions on the highway.
